Alonso signs with Renault

I can’t tell you how excited I was, when the news broke yesterday that Fernando Alonso was returning to F1. He has signed for the 2021 season to partner Esteban Ocon in the Renault garage.

Of course it was at Renault, that Alonso won his 2 F1 titles. Going back 15 years ago. He in my mind is the best F1 driver since Schumacher. There are lots of young drivers coming through, but I would have him ahead of Hamilton, just.

The best of modern f1 returns

Alonso shows age is just a number

Fernando turns 39 next month, but age has not taken away this man’s talent. He has been winning titles in Indycar, since he left F1 after the 2018 season. He is that good.

What a great thing for Renault and Ocon, getting to learn from the great. I am not sure if it will be just for one season, but I can imagine he will want to still be there in 2022, when the new rules are brought in.

He will get to see the master at work

What now for Seb?

Well it begs the question what next for Vettel. He has already lost his seat to Carlos Sainz, at Ferrari. Now the Renault spot has been taken by Alonso. I can’t see Seb being happy driving for a low scoring team.

Does he take the decision to have a sabbatical? The only seat you believe would interest him, is Bottas at Mercedes. If Bottas has a good season though, do Mercedes re-sign him? It will be interesring.

Go or Merc only option for seb

And finally…..

When all is said and done, it is just great news for F1 fans. Fernando Alonso makes the brand, and the sport a better package. One of the greatest has returned.

Welcome back Fernando
